Vršič, 26 April 2014, detour 24

An ascent to 1611m high Vršič mountain pass is a great challenge to many cyclists.  And to be honest, there was an idea for quite some time to place Prologue ‘14 right on it.  But then…well it was just a one-time idea that entered our heads. Nevertheless, this challenge Vršič is eternal and so Milena and I, on Saturday, 26th April, decided to check out the rumours about those huge amounts of snow that remained on the top. This season I only managed to cycle cca 400 km and this ‘huge uphill’ was definitely not the route to look forward to. However, following the saying ‘everything is in our heads’ we quickly decided to go, despite the bad weather. We started at 8am and for the first time we used mountain bikes.

We were rewarded with a great experience: practically no cars, only four bikers and wonderful weather. There is still enough snow on Vršič so I recommend you to take your time and do the challenge – it’s definitely worth it.

While returning back home we also followed the 3rd stage course of Rekreatur 2014.  Because this was the first check-up let me say only this:  there is roughly 95 km waiting for you (10 more than anticipated) and cca 870 m ascents.  You will be rewarded by some fresh new asphalt roads! They are finishing an extension of cycling lane D-2 Mojstrana, the road 1. maja in Jesenice (there was no new asphalt for at least 40 years!) and the road from Mlino to Selo village near Bled.
